Podargus strigoides
Nyungar: kambany
Tawny frogmouths are night hunters, roosting in the lower branches of trees. Their mottled grey colouring and upwards angle of their heads upwards helps them blend into the tree structure. Like owls they have big heads and yellow eyes, but a closer look reveals their eyes do not face completely forward and they do not have talons to grasp prey. Frogmouths catch insects and very small animals with their beaks, natural pest controllers. They are frequent visitors to the woodland sections nearer to the wetlands where insects are plentiful.
