Golden Orb Weaver

Nephila edulis
Nyungar: kara

Orb weavers can be found in remnant bushland, the large females are easy to spot in their golden webs. The webs are often strung between trees where they trap flying insects and unwary bushwalkers. Unlike spiders that make daily webs, golden orb weavers have a semi-permanent web until winter and sometimes aggregate their webs. If you look closely, you may see the much smaller male spiders on the edges of webs. The Golden Orb Weaver is not aggressive to humans and their bite is not lethal.
