Nuytsia floribunda
Nyungar: moodjar
Nuytsia is hemi-parasitic because, while it has green leaves and can photosynthesise, it takes water and nutrients from other plants’ roots with a specialised structure called a haustorium. By finding haustoria attached to roots scientists discovered that Nuytsia can attack many different species, including weed and crop plants. It also produces suckers by sending rhizomes under the ground, which is why it appears sometimes in groves. The rhizomes can send out their own roots and attack new plants via haustoria.
